The monocle is designed to sit comfortably between the fleshy parts of the eyebrow and fleshy part of the lower eye socket above the cheekbone.
The metal frame of the eyepiece has a protruding ledge called "The Gallery". It is specifically located at the top and bottom sitting proud of the mainframe.

Muscles That Hold the Monocle in Place
The Orbicularis Oculi is a strong muscle that covers the circumference of the outer orbit and provides the monocle with a nice relaxed tension to hold it comfortably and reasonably firmly in place.
There is no need to over contract or squint the eyelids together for the monocle to stay in place.

If you’re in a sweaty hot country like Oz and, no matter how hard you nestle the galleries, it slicks up and pops out: fear not, there’s an easy fix.
Thin leather thonging/lacing, wrapped around the gallery rail and set with a drop of super glue at each end.
Works brilliantly and looks classy too!
I find it really useful and practical to have a monocle hanging around my neck for the most of the time. It is not only handy to read the menus in the restaurants (and pay the bills), but it’s also useful to have a quick glance at a musical score. Not to mention the fun I have when (young) people react very amazed and begin to ask questions when I place it before my eye… ;-)
